Parent Or Holcomb: Who Will Run For District 81?
The two lawmakers will announce their decision on Friday.
State Reps. Elena Parent and Scott Holcomb - two Democratic incumbents who have been reapportioned into the same district - will announce who is running for the District 81 seat on Friday, May 25, at noon.
The lawmakers will hold a press conference at the state capitol, where candidate qualifying began on Wednesday and will continue through Friday.
Both Parent and Holcomb have referred to each other as friends and colleagues, and are widely considered to be rising stars within the Georgia Democratic Party.
During the most recent legislative redistricting process, Parent's and Holcomb's respective districts were combined, meaning they have to run against each other in order to make it to the Nov. 6 general primary.
District 81 includes much of Brookhaven. Holcomb's former district included the North Druid Hills, Briarcliff and Tucker communities.
Reapportionment is mandated every 10 years with each new Census, to reflect population changes. The state's majority party is responsible for re-drawing the maps, and in 2010, that responsiblity fell to Georgia republicans.
