Several 10-foot-tall metal yellow ribbons have been installed at the entrance into Oglethorpe University, as the school prepares to mark Veterans Day with a week-long series of events.

The ribbons were constructed and installed by the O.U. Veterans' Club.

Oglethorpe will commemorate Veterans Day this year with a week-long series of
events called “Our Country, Our Voices: Oglethorpe Honors Our Veterans.” The events are held in conjunction with the current exhibition “Burden of Proof: National Identity and the Legacy of War,” which runs through December 9, 2012 at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art.

The schedule of events includes:

• Veterans’ Open House
  Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, 12 noon-7:00 p.m.
  Usually closed on Mondays, the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art will open its doors to host an open house, with free admission to all veterans. Various veterans’ assistance groups will be on site throughout the day. The Oglethorpe Veterans’ Club will be accepting final donations for their clothing and coat drive to benefit homeless veterans. A giveaway of gift items from area businesses will benefit veterans’ services. Admission: $5 or free for OUMA members or veterans.

• Panel Discussion: “Transitioning to Civilian Life,” 6:00 p.m.
  As part of the open house, there will be a panel discussion by veterans of conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. They will discuss the challenges faced by veterans when transitioning to civilian life.

• Open Forum/Open Mic: “Empower to Inspire Progress”
  Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, 7:00 p.m.
  Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, Lowry Hall
  What does being American mean to you? What are you doing to make your voice heard? Do you feel you have patriotic obligations? Which American alive or dead inspire you, and why? All are welcome to join this open forum and share your opinions, ideas or a story, song or poem. Admission: $5 or free for
  OUMA members.

• Lecture: “On the Downstream Biological Effects of Agent Orange”
  Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, 7:00 p.m.
  Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, Lowry Hall
  Dr. Karen Schmeichel, Associate Professor of Biology at Oglethorpe, will present about the hotly debated and complex subject of the widespread use by American troops during the Vietnam conflict of the defoliant called “Agent Orange” and its far reaching effects. The presentation is part of the lecture series in conjunction with the current exhibition “Burden of Proof: National Identity and the Legacy of War,” which runs through December 9, 2012. Admission: $5 or free for OUMA members.

• Movie Screening & Discussion: Agent Orange: 30 Years Later
  Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, 7:00 p.m.
  Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, Lowry Hall
  OUMA will host a screening of the award-winning 2009 film by John Trinh with open discussion to follow. Reel Earth – Environmental Film Festival of New Zealand said, “Despite the horror, the film is at times intensely moving and beautiful, showing also the better side of human nature—qualities like
  kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.” The event is sponsored by OUMA and ECOS (Environmentally Concerned Oglethorpe Students.) Free event.
