Mayoral Forum Brings a Little Heat
The mayoral forum at Oglethorpe University's Lupton Hall brought a little more heat than the past mayoral debates.
The three candidates– Larry Danese, J. Max Davis and Sandy Murray- hoping to earn enough votes to become Brookhaven's first mayor took the stage again to answer questions from residents in another mayoral forum.
The forum was hosted by the Brookhaven Reporter at Oglethorpe University's Lupton Hall on Monday evening.
The format of the forum was just like the last mayoral forum hosted by the Ashford Park Civic Association and the Drew Valley Civic Association. Audience members could ask questions and the candidates took turns answering them.
Throughout the last forum, however, the candidates would often agree with each other. This time, the candidates took a little more time to make sure Brookhaven residents could see them as three distinct characters, even if that meant playing a little hardball that wasn't played in the last forum.
Video of the full forum will be posted here later today. The video attached was created by Brookhaven Reporter reporter Dan Whisenhunt.
What did you think of Monday's mayoral forum? Do you wish you could've heard something specific from the candidates that you haven't heard? Tell us below in the comments.

Well, referring to his comments towards the end of this video, it will be very enlightening to compare J. Max Davis’s list of contributors to Neighbors for J. Max Davis, to the contributors to Brookhaven Yes, Inc, Brookhaven Ballot Committee, Inc, and Start Brookhaven Right, Inc. If you follow the money you just might have more questions than you initially thought you would.

The words 'sophistry and specious,' come to mind as I read this comment.
Losers don't legislate - How does anyone say 'no' to contributors and win? They don't.
Look here to see who got what:

Then ask the candidates how those contributions will affect their decisions. Then see how things play out, you might be surprised.
BTW, can anyone support why the charter was changed?

If you have a point, make it. Allusions to who funded the Vinson Study are meaningless. I would guess the people who see that DeKalb rule is BS would fund such a Study.
This is why so many people think you are a creep, HamBurger. You toss out non sequitors, red herrings, and sophistry like they are facts.

The funding sources for the Vinson study are meaningless? LOL, these people are the creators of the city of Brookhaven. I think the tax payers would like to know just who they are. And, what business is it of an elected state official to go around creating a new city? Actually, some would say the Brookhaven Yes movement, the people associated with it, and the lack of transparency is kind of creepy.
Brookhaven, the city founded under some creepy circumstances.
So, who are these people we are so indebted to for their new city? I want to place their names on a plaque to be installed at J. Max Davis’s new office located at the old Kroger on Peachtree!

We are not talking about a publicity funded university; we are talking about a privately funded study manipulated to paint a rosy picture for new city incorporation that a select few participated in. The outcome affects many more tax payers and business owners than those select few, yet they will not state who they are.

It was an informative event with good questions and some good answers. Too bad Sandy would not admit that she was fighting cityhood all the way, right up until the polls closed on July 31. Sandy claims she is a leader but some of her weak answers, e.g. saying the role of the mayor is to make the city look good, raises questions about her understanding. She could demonstrate leadership by getting her campaign staff to remove all her illegal campaign signs from the public right of ways. Did Sandy attend candidate training class offered by the Georgia Municipal Association last weekend? Sandy seems confused about how to determine the size of our police force. I think she is just trying to create contention. She could not resist showing her true nature by attacking J. Max during her (desperate) summation.

Here you go again. GEtting made and personally attacking people. I have reported you to the Patch.
Facts: One candidate has and will make back-room deals. Then he will have to deliver on those promises. Is this transparency from him? Fat chance.
PS.. Kiri....I gues now we all know why there were workers at the old Harris Teeter and what one of them told me was the truth. One candidate desperately wants the new city hall there....on the North Side. You know...where "those kinds" of people are not. Really interesting. Another case of "transparency"? You bet.

Kiri,
I would have liked to hear someone ask the question..."As a Mayoral Candidate, just how far do you think you can go with meeting with vendors, making promises, etc., without the will of the people being heard and considered? After all, it is one thing to actually BE the Mayor and an entirely different thing running around pretending like it - rubbing elbows and taking money from potential vendors. Kind of expected but I for one had hoped for better character in our "jewel of the south".

The idea of having your City Hall anywhere is being vetted right now. Taking a valuable property off the tax roll (Harris Teeter) may not make sense.
Buford Highway office buildings may make more sense, but this constant chatter about transparency, in light of what BS DeKalb offers, is pretty lame.

I made it to the forum last evening. This was my first chance to see and hear all the candidates at the same time. The discussion was pretty much what I expected. Since J. Max has been working on BY for at least 2 years, it's no surprise that he came across very confident and in a "Brookhaven booster" manner. Larry is a very thoughtful person but his unassuming personal and communication style will not draw anyone who doesn't know him to his support. Sandy also made several good points. I just believe there are still too many folks who will never give her any benefit of the doubt, recognize she does have competencies to be an effective mayor, but won't due to her cityhood history. I estimate there was maybe a 100 to 120 folks in the room. I was expecting a little larger turnout since this was an excellent opportunity to see the mayorial candidates in the last days before the vote. I interpret this apathy as troublesome. Finally, the district candidates in attendance were recognized. I was surprised at the low turnout by the district candidates. Kevin and Julia were the only two from my district 3. Maybe others slipped in and I missed them, but very few were there to listen and meet folks.

There will be four council members and a mayor involved in everything going on with the City. Not to mention a City Manager.
S, we are to presume that four council members and the City manager and the Police Chief are going to quietly fold because a mayor supposedly has made deals? Yeah, right.
One phone call to media and it is over--- this long awaited conspiracy finally revealed.
These continual conspiracies seem to sprout from the vivid imaginations of some posters that really have too much time on their hands. And the presumption is that the conspiracies are emanating only from those that were instrumental in bringing the city to a vote (note I did not say "Those that forced the city down our throats").
It is like there are people that believe that because the electorate did not agree with them on the drawbacks to having a city, then the electorate are just the proverbial unthinking rats in the Pied Piper going down the sewer.
I have a bit more self esteem than that--I can think for myself and I am not to be manipulated into thinking these grand conspiracies exist.
Now-- who is going to say first that I am in on some conspiracy? Anyone?

No mention is made of mayoral candidates saying they are the ONLY successful businessperson in the race. Nope--clearly a falsehood which reflects on character. But,hey, who cares?
If Davis or Danese were to win and there was a "too cozy" relationship divulged in political contributions, do you think anyone would speak up? LOL. Of course.
The fact is that I would not want to be a potential vendor on the political contributor list of the new mayor. They would most likely be challenged should they "win" a RFP.
But, I guess the 4 council members that win independently in various districts will suddenly become mute and maleable. They will be reclassified as cronies of the new Mayor. They will be in on the fix.
Mr. Larson, have there been any conspiracies on RFP awards in Dekalb County?

Per the Citizen's for North DeKalb flyer I got 911 service was not going to be a city service (expense); mission creep and not even a functioning city yet? And I think the 911 experience spoken of was more of Sandy Springs and Atlanta playing hot potato with the candidate's call. It seemed strange to assign fault to DeKalb in a letter to the Reporter Newpaper when the short comings were mainly with Sandy Springs 911.
The Crier article I read said the 13 minute police response time was for calls for service that were not high priority. My own experience was a much faster response time; even faster than the fire department to my call.
Our current police force is local and all it takes to know the officers is to attend any of the many functions they already participate in. They have provided me with excellent information in response to all my questions.
Leave this service with the county. Dunwoody's 2013 budget again has another request from the their police chief for another $1M. We'll get more police services by contracting with the county than by trying to stand up a minimal service police department.
Devote the new city's time to code enforcement, parks, paving, permits, planning and zoning.

Mr. Still Weary, addressing your Tuesday 4:47 PM comment, here is one for you:
A man comes from a major Georgia city and county that has undergone successful consolidation of city and county government and settles down in Atlanta. He then proceeds to become active in C$ND and backed by an anonymous group of donors has a Vinson study done for the purpose of creating a new city that further fragments a county and region.
Why, instead of fragmenting the new neighborhood he has moved into with another layer of government, would he not try to make constructive changes to his existing government by working for government consolidation?
Tape #2 – Mark 1:29 – Question with concerns about small cities and fragmentation of the area.

Been there, done that. This was discussed previously and yet you choose not to understand the political reality. Your POV is foolish and a waste of time. don't you think this approach has already been tried?
It has. It fails. It is not currently possible.

I get it. I have seen a movement for cityhood for a group of folks that were not a part of Dunwoody and rejected being annexed into Chamblee. I also get that state elected officials, instead of organizing along with citizens for the purpose of changing DeKalb government opted to create a new city further fragmenting the region.
As Mr. Larry pointed out, there are problems that arise from fragmenting a geographical area. Although you think you have made great strides in distancing yourself from DeKalb by creating a new city, you have created another set of problems to deal with. Plus, as small governments tend to do, overtime they emulate the government they sought to escape from. Soon we will have our own little version of Peyton Place.

Folks, I am voting for J. Max Davis and Rebecca Chase Williams. I want you to have the leaders you deserve for your new city. Who else stands a chance in district #1? Besides, with all the scrutinization they will be receiving at city council meetings, they will surely boost my city hall concession business!
Please pass the yellow mustard!
Just wondering

Hamburger, I have been away, but back now!! I find your comment very contradictory. You have stated you are voting for J Max. Don't be changing your tune now!! He has already counted your vote!!

It is encouraging to remember that as the City moves forward, me and my fellow posters here will not have too much input beyond any other resident who never posts here. We will vote for our council representative and they will be charged to make certain there is no corruption, transparent awards of RFP's etc.
Apparently, I have a higher regard for the intelligence of residents than many prolific posters here. It must give certain people some solace to anonymously declare public figures corrupt without any evidence.
"I presume, therefore I am right." is not a legal maxim.
Still Weary

Correct, Phil, if I may:

Mr. Phil, you forgot to clarify that your statement applies to the one quarter of the registered voters that make up the 55%.
Please pass the yellow mustard!
Oh so very weary...

That 1/4 of the registered voters that made up the 55% is the MAJORITY.
You ought not do math in public...

Three quarters of the registered voters did not vote. Just hope they keep on sleeping and do not start attending city council meetings.
Please pass the yellow mustard!
Let's Make Brookhaven Great

I have removed Sandy Murray from the list of candidates that might get my vote for Mayor. Its down to J. Max or Larry. Her answers in both forums and my research here and elsewhere have led to this decision. I apologize for not using my real name but I do not wish to be attacked by her supporters.
Sandy has never successfully run a campaign or civic organization.
I do not think Sandy listens well. Here are some of her posts from the Patch. Not very diplomatic or astute if you ask moi.
http://brookhaven.patch.com/users/sandy-murray/comments
"You seem to be ignorant of the fact that everyone filed their campaign reports after voting started. It started July 9!"
"The current charter absolutely does NOT talk about any services. Read it for yourself. Nothing! No services at all. AND no budget either. "Trust me" those Yesers say! HA!"
"What I meant by the city charter does not guarantee any of the services that the CVI studied. In fact it says nothing about the services the city will offer nor does it say anything about a budget. But oh goody! There's a big pile of money to play with!"
Her inability to focus and follow through is also demonstrated by the fact that a day or two after the Primary Election she dropped out as the Democratic Nominee for State Representative to run for Mayor of Brookhaven. By qualifying as the Democratic candidate in this race she may have prevented another person from qualifying. Now Mike Jacobs has no opponent.
Low and Behold
