Governor Deal Signs Brookhaven Cityhood Bill

Nathan Deal signed HB 636 at 2 p.m. Monday.

Surrounded by the bill's sponsors and its most dedicated supporters, and despite a petition asking for a one-year delay, Gov. Nathan Deal signed House Bill 636 - the controversial legislation to create a charter for a city of Brookhaven.

The bill's signing, which occured Monday at 2 p.m. in Deal's office, allows the more than 48,000 residents within the proposed  boundary to vote on a referendum on July 31. If the referendum passes, election of the city council of the city would occur in the general election.

"I'm obviously pleased that the Governor has taken the last step that is necessary in [the State Legislature] in Brookhaven's path to cityhood. Now it's time for the people to decide," said State Rep. Mike Jacobs outside the Governor's office Monday.

"You're always happy to see another step in the process completed, now the real work begins," he said.

That work, according to leaders of the Brookhaven YES cityhood advocacy group is continuing to educate neighbors on what they believe are the benefits of cityhood.

Brookhaven YES president J. Max Davis said he already has knocked on 70 doors and we and other group members will continue to do so until July.

"We have a lot of work in front of us," Davis said.

I've never been sadder to be a Republican. Nor do I think I'll remain one.

I'm sure the DNC will value your contribution as much as the RNC misses it…

Sgt. Drucker - Looked at the Ashford Neighbors web site. Thats a negative on the hippie description. Saw some major Psy Ops maneuvers. Heavy artillery fired at one reporter. Big development. Eye's Only. Over.

Mr. GuruLikeDrucker, some would say that there is no such thing as a Republican in Georgia anymore, certainly not in DeKalb County. Many current Republicans were recently once Democrats and simply switched parties due to the change in political tide in order to maintain their elected position.

It should be clear now that Jacobs, like so many other state congresspersons, do not, and never have, represented their constituents whether the congressperson or constituents be Republican, Democrat, Independent or, this new farce, "Impartial."

They represent their camarista. only.

Mr. Peipe, welcome home. Just a little voting detail since you have been gone for so long. You need to make sure you are registered in a timely fashion to insure you can vote in July and you must show identification to insure you vote only once, not ten or twelve times that some folks used to vote.

You know, my father passed away twenty years ago and we voted at the same precinct. For several years I would notice that on vote day, after his passing, he continued to vote earlier in the day as I always voted late in the evening after work. He was a fine father and I always hoped to see him again, but it never happened. When I.D.’s were required for voting that all changed and he quit voting. Father, I still miss you . . .

If you were still around, I would make that special Mr. Hamburger that you always liked with thin sliced onions and pickles and yellow mustard!

It is a sad day in the Brookhaven community when a small group of people can force this signature by the governor on the majority of. Citizens in Dekalb County. Kevin G Hughley,President of Brookhaven Chamblee Home Owners and Neighborhood Business Alliance

"...a small group of people can force this signature by the governor on the majority..."

Shouldn't it tell anyone from just who the proposal and "force" truly originated?

Kevin, I agree with you 100%. This has been a political hijacking. I doubt the fine folks responsible will be available 5 years from now spinning lame excuses on why taxes went up and services declined.

What's the downside of having Brookhaven become a city? And how will this affect Chamblee residents?
