Georgia Shakespeare Announces 2013 Season
Shakespeare in the Park will be back and the company will focus on four major productions.
Georgia Shakespeare has announced its 2013 schedule, which focuses on four major productions and aims to make Shakespeare in the Park one of Atlanta's signature cultural events.
Shakespeare in the Park premieres on May 1 at Piedmont Park with "Much Ado About Nothing." Last year, more than 1,000 people attended the Saturday night performance of "The Tempest," the largest single-day audience in Georgia Shakespeare's history. "Much Ado About Nothing" runs through May 5.
"Metamorphoses," based on Ovid's myths, will open June 21 at Oglethorpe University's Conant Performing Arts Center. Georgia Shakespeare first premiered "Metamorphoses" in 2006 and it boasts critical acclaim and great attendance.
"Mighty Myths and Legends" also premieres in the summer. This is a world premiere of a play written by Richard Garner, co-founder and producing artistic director at Georgia Shakespeare. Also drawing its material from "Metamorphoses," this play is geared towards families.
Fall will see Georgia Shakespeare put on "Hamlet," also at Conant.
Georgia Shakespeare has two goals for its 2013 season: again, make Shakespeare in the Park a signature cultural event in the city and focus on two standalone productions in the summer, including one for families.
The company nearly shut down in 2011 and was rescued from that fate by mounting a fundraising campaign.
