County Postpones Meeting With Residents Regarding Rec Center

County, commissioner said there is a lack of interest in the center from the community.

A group of citizens who have been requesting a meeting with DeKalb County officials about renovating the Briarwood Rec Center aren't having much success.

Two meetings have been scheduled and then cancelled with less than 24 hours notice by District 2 Commissioner Jeff Rader's office and the DeKalb Parks Recreation Department. The meetings were scheduled for Monday, May 21, and Thursday, May 31.

"It's just extremely frustrating," said Rob Turner, one of the local residents who is urging DeKalb County to renovate the facility. "From our conversations with the county, we still don't know what, if any, plans are in the works for the Briarwood Park and rec center."

Rader called Turner late Friday afternoon, a conversation that Turner called "productive.

"We had a good conversation," Turner said. "Basically, he said a lot of the stakeholders in the park and rec center aren't responding to the county's calls for input and participation. Without representatives from some of these neighborhood associations and groups, they really can't advance the ball."

What do they call a lack of interest ?? The meeting held earlier in May was standing room only and the County had no agenda and was completely unprepared for the turnout and outcry from neighbors. I was there and witnessed the debacle. The only thing important to these folks( Ellis and Gannon) is that it is a re-election year and putting up $4000.00 dollar signs with Ellis's name in big bold letters for campaigning at tax payers expense.....(corner of Brairwwod and Briarwood Way) I still contend that Briarwood Park stands a better chance of re-vitalization under the City of Brookhaven than it every will with Dekalb County. It may take a few years but it would eventually happen.

Hardly a lack of interest! What's the point if the City of Brookhaven is to take over. Wait until August 1 to talk to the County.

Sandy - your ongoing defense of the incompetence of county administrators is unacceptable. Which is why you will lose come November.
