Chamblee Scout: Treat The American Flag With Respect

Boy Scout Harry Andrews will conduct a flag retirement ceremony on Thursday night.

Harry Andrews set out to collect 50 American flags for a flag retirement ceremony.

Instead, he wound up with 103, all from donations.

Harry, a scout with Troop 15 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, will conduct the ceremony at 7 pm on Thursday at the church's flagpole, in conjunction with Flag Day.

"To be an Eagle Scout, you have to complete a major project," he said. "Some people really don't know what a flag retirement ceremony is all about, and I wanted people to be aware that it's important to treat the flag with respect."

Harry also constructed a wooden bin that was placed inside the church's assembly room, for people to donate used or worn flags for use in the ceremony.

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the American flag.
