Brookhaven: Thumbs Down to New DeKalb Public Affairs Position

DeKalb County recently created a chief of public affairs position out of the parks budget.

Brookhaven residents have reacted with disappointment - but not surprise - to last week's news that DeKalb has created a new public affairs position out of the county's parks budget.

Jill Strickland Luse was named last week as DeKalb County's chief of public affairs, charged with developing and directing the implementation of the county's communications program.

But the AJC reported on Sunday that the six-figure-salary position came out of the county's parks budget, prompting a strong reaction from several Brookhaven residents.

Brookhaven resident Chad Boles - who has organized and formed the Friends of Briarwood Park organization, was quoted as saying, “That money could pay for a playground, or fund a girls’ softball league for an entire season for underprivileged kids. I wish I could say I was shocked, but it’s just one more thing in a long history of irresponsible decisions that are made by DeKalb County.”

Friends of Briarwood Park has held several work days and activities at the facility, which will soon become the property of the new city of Brookhaven.

Another Brookhaven resident, Sue Binkert, was quoted as saying, “I am just disappointed they’re using money earmarked for parks for other purposes.”

Binkert is leading a group of volunteers who are planning improvements to the city's eight parks, once Brookhaven assumes ownership of them.

“One of my top priorities is better customer service delivery for DeKalb County,” said DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis, when he made the announcement. "Jill will support this priority by improving the way the county communicates with more than 700,000 DeKalb County residents."

Strickland Luse will direct the external and internal communications for the county including oversight of DeKalb County Television. She will also be responsible for a communications team that will provide public relations assistance to the board of commissioners and departments that communicate with county businesses, employees and residents.

Just another poor decision to add to a long list of poor management decisions by the higher ups in Dekalb County. There is really no way you can justify taking funds out of a parks budget--a budget severely overstretched and obvious when you visit the parks-to pay for a PR person. Unbelieveably transparent--Burrell Ellis is in dire need to pitch his administration's position to the voters.

Where are the Commissioners!??

Mr. Phil, you are representative of the typical citizen that voted for the city of Brookhaven without a clue about DeKalb government, the county in which you still remain and pay taxes.

The Board of Commissioners is the legislative branch that makes policy and approves the budget. The CEO is the administrative branch that handles the day to day activities and has the authority to hire or fire employees.

I bet if you queried the DeKalb commissioners they would to a man be frustrated with this hire as all DeKalb citizens that are paying attention are. Just like the DeKalb commissioners were to a man very unhappy with the hire of the now no longer employed (recently resigned) Ellis buddy William “Whiz” Miller. You do know they protested “Whiz” for several years, right?

Instead of putting the horse before the cart and creating a new city, Rep. Mike Jacobs, Rep Tom Taylor and Sen. Fran Millar should have concentrated on changing the CEO style of DeKalb government. Then, if necessary, they could move forward with their plans for a city.

As it is now, we have an underfunded city that may not be able to live up to its promises by C$ND and Brookhaven Yes. And, we STILL live in a dysfunctional county with a debilitated school system.

Please pass the yellow mustard!

It's nonsense like this that validates the concept for the city, and will serve as fodder for the other new city movements.

The move of a desperate politician, one who cant accept the fact his political career is toast (somewhere ole VJ is ROFLOL). Ellis needs to focus on an exit stradegy not some lame attempt to revive his political aspirations. CEO your own party has now shunned you; the DA and the President. Exit the stage please. Unfortunately I don't think dumb decisions like this are reserved for DeKalb County. Sandy Springs had to fire a city solicitor because her husband is to be sentenced on federal drug charges ( http://sandysprings.patch.com/articles/new-asst-city-solicitor-gone-faces-wrongful-death-suit-tied-to-synthetic-marijuana-industry -was contracted with the city through Riley McClendon law fim) and Johns Creek just threw away tax payer money when Roswell served them with a stop work order. (http://www.ajc.com/news/news/cities-get-mixed-signals-over-traffic-light/nWqGS/ -Johns Creek City Attorney William Riley). Thank goodness Brookhaven is making good deceisions (http://brookhavenga.gov/uploads/Mayor_Appoints_City_Solicitor_Press_Release_2-26-13.pdf -Mayor appoints William "Bill" Riley as solicitor and city attorney)...Oh...The problem isn't THE govt but rather the problem IS govt.
