Brookhaven's Finest: Dressed in Blues ... Or Blacks ... Or Grays?

Take our Patch poll and tell us what color the city's police uniforms should be.

For the past couple of days, Brookhaven has been interviewing candidates for its first-ever chief of police, who may be on the job as soon as May.

Now, we can only imagine how many important items are going to come across the new chief's desk as soon as he or she takes office:

  • How much money do we have to hire police officers?
  • What kind of salaries and benefits are we talking about?
  • How many cars do we need?
  • What brand of radios should we purchase?
  • Where's our HQ going to be?
  • What color should our uniforms be?

Oh, wait a sec, Patch has already taken care of that.

That's right. Patch would like to take at least one of these important decisions off the new chief's shoulders. We want to know from you: what color uniforms should Brookhaven's (soon-to-be) Finest wear?

Now, there's no guarantee the new chief will follow our advice. But considering the full plate he or she is going to inherit, we're hoping that any advice will be appreciated.

Brookhaven’s police uniforms? I think the first 2-4 officers on each shift should wear the same color as DeKalb, so Brookhaven’s naysayers will have the same (false) sense of police coverage as they enjoy today with DeKalb. The additional officers on each shift would wear a contrasting color, so we would know they are a benefit of cityhood and local control.

And, we only need 2 – 4 uniforms per shift and one for the chief! I just love saving money!

Please pass the yellow mustard!

The math of a grossly undersized Police department just seems difficult to sink in for some posters.

Let’s compare this to something we all understand – football. Football teams are composed of many members from which to select a squad of 11 players to use on the field. Team DeKalb has nearly 100 members, but often has less than 11 on the field. Team Brookhaven has only 55 members, but always fields a squad of 11. Which team will likely prevail? I’ll bet on Brookhaven.

@PkCk..Where did BYers get this idea that there were only 2 to 4 officers assigned to B'haven. The precinct commander told us at a community meeting he had at least 6 and up to 12 officers in the city foot print per shift. At that time they ran 4 shifts, I'm told since the incorporation the county has reassigned some officers and they are down to 3 shifts but still filling them with 6 or more officers. For a 24 hr period that is a minimum of 18 officers in the foot print. What I am hearing is the city intends to run 2 shifts to cover a 24 hr period with at most 9 uniform officers so they could claim they equal the present coverage. But that still doesn't count all the other officers that have or had responsibilties in B'haven; the DUI squad, the K9 officers or the motorcycle officers to name a few. The next layer was the specialized units or detectives; gang unit, SWAT, traffic detectives or specialized detective like Special Victims. We're losing access to all that!

Thank you to the DeKalb County police officer(s) who have been present at the front of Ashford Park School in recent weeks. Your presence has been noticed and is great appreciated. We look forward to Brookhaven PD stepping in and taking over this role come Fall of 2013.

All this talk about Uniforms, But nothing on the "HIRING" I'm guessing what they are going to do is take Police Officers from the Dekalb County Police Dept as well as Chamblee, Doraville, Dunwoody and Sandy Springs area in order to put this Dept together. I say that because they know the area more i guess. but anyway Officers like myself can't find anything on them in order to place a pre app in. Hope they get it together and it's a JAM up Dept.

Also, I like the Black like DeKalb, But it's Dark Blue to the END.
Better color for Class-A's, it's a more professional look for an officer, and it's not an "Agressive" color.

Grey, Looks like your and EMT/EMS worker, So I'd opt out of Grey unless it's a Tac Uniform, but even still i'd prefer Black or OD-Green for Tac/ SWAT.

Black, not inviting and fades to quick. Starts looking nasty and for officers, thats one thing I hate to see is a tacky looking uniform. Only way Black looks nice is unless you get a uniform allowance and you keep getting new unifomrs after your 2 or third wash. Just my .02 Pennies.
