The Brookhaven Farmer's Market enjoyed a great turn out on its first day in Brookhaven. The market, formerly located behind The Frosty Caboose in Chamblee, now sets up in the lot behind Haven on Dresden Drive. The market's main themes are locally grown, sustainable produce, meats, cheeses, and renewable goods. Vendors offered a variety of delights like handmade ceramics, organic beef, chicken and pork. There were also delicious cheeses and a colorful variety of seasonable vegetables.

Shiitake mushroom cultivators Todd Pittard and Howard Berk of 2FunGuys provided one example of the interesting sustainable products sold at the market. Their business offers logs filled with shiitake plugs for buyers to take home, keep damp and grow the tasty mushrooms at home.

Pittard and Berk are very pleased with the market's new location.

"The turn out has been great. The community has responded. We have good vendors, and its just been a good day", said Pittard.

The market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Yesterday, the turn out was around 400 customers before noon. Many vendors ran out of stock by 11 a.m., unused to the high level of foot traffic Brookhaven has to offer.

Brookhaven Farmer's Market president Lori Harris is excited about success and growth of the market in the weeks ahead.

"The market is definitely going to grow," Harris said.

Brookhaven residents can enjoy the new market every Saturday behind Haven from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October. Shoppers eager to get the best pick of the farm-to-table organic goods, like the huge bunches of thai and lemon basil from Tewksbury Farms, should get to the market early, and bring a basket!
