All DeKalb County Libraries will begin selling new library cards September 1.  The cost is a $20 donation to the DeKalb Library Foundation.  Initially, 5,000 Pete the Cat cards will be available for purchase.  Visit any branch to purchase a card.  For more information, go to Library Foundation or call 404.370.8450, ext. 2238.

Stop by the lobby of the Decatur Library on September 1 from 10am to Noon and have your photo taken with Pete the Cat creator, James Dean.

Why does a new card "cost" a "donation"? Isn't a donation.voluntary in nature? Is this donation required for a regular library card or just this "Pete the Cat" card?

I'd call the library for more information, FreddieK, but my assumption is that the donation is just for the Pete the Cat cards, which – again, I'm assuming – are aimed at children.

They're not selling them. The DeKalb Library Foundation, a non-profit that helps raise money for the library will give the card to anyone who makes a donation. It's a limited edition card from a nationally known illustrated of children's books. But adults like his "pete the cat" artwork which he has been doing for years. I think he lives somewhere in DeKalb. I have seen his art displayed in an art store in decatur. It's like the fundraiser they did a few years ago when they had an art contest to design limited edition cards. Their budget has been cut to next to nothing to buy books so they are trying to raise money. I think it's great they are thinking of ways to raise money. I think they, the library foundation ( not the library itself) are also selling tshirts and stuff with the artwork.
